so finally after a years of reading and research I finally have an opportunity to raise a silver aro...everything has been fine for a month, go down to feed him this morning and he is laying on his side and flopping as if hes in shock....immediately transfer him to a sick tank...bumped the temp up to 80 and salt...he was the only fish in the 75gal...temp is 75f. and all levels are perfect...he was eating fine and everything...he acting as if his left side is paralyzied...any help would help, thanks oh hes small only 3 3/4 inch long

How is it doing now after a few hours later? How long was he in your 75gallon before that occurred? Meaning 1-2 days just arrived or longer?

Thank you so much for replying, he's still alive...hasn't went vertical, but will fight to swim around for a bit...then just calmly lays down on the bottom....it's been 12 hrs of the same activity...he's been in the 75 for 3 weeks, I had him in a established 55 with a baby Longfin oscar his 1st week, then transferred him to the 75 because the Oscar was cornering him....I changed nothing in feeding pattern or water changes....water parameters are all in line...I'm completely stumped...he was eating regularly and everything

Hopefully Aro pulls through, and I personally wouldn't put him back in with the Oscar until he grows to about 1' in length. Aro's are very fragile at 3-4 inches.

Thanks, I'm hoping he does too...sucks I have been waiting for years to find a little fella like this and this is happening, he most certainly will not meet the Oscar again until they are both ready for the big tank!

I know he was in the earlier tank for 3 weeks, but did you check the water parameters when this started? Not doubting you, but just want to rule out the basics and nothing has varied. What's it eating up to this point?

Thanks for replying, he was in the other tank for one week only then I transferred too the 75 once I saw it was being bullied by the oscar, I immediately checked the water balance when I came down and seen something was wrong...absolutely everything was in in line...per instructions of the per store I bought it from I'm feeding plankton (San Francisco baby brand) the label says and hikari cichlid gold pellets that I would alternate feeding...I also soak the pellets before putting them In as the seemed too large for its mouth...fed 3 times daily and removed anything it ignored after 10 min

Possibility of jumping or running into the glass. Smaller aros spook extremely easy and are very jumpy until they are older.
I'm my success residing baby aros, small frequent water changes live brine shrimp, black worms and mixing in frozen or freeze dried Make sure tank is sealed good. They will find a way out a couple floating plants for cover to feel secure

thanks for replying, I didn't even consider that happening at all...ive examined it thoroughly and there are no signs of damage at all...I also only have it in 10in of water as jumping out is a fear of and this particular tank I do not have a cover for...do you think the plankton and pellets could be an issue? the food is the only other consideration outside of the jumping I can think of

I personally have always fed small Aro's with softer smaller floating foods such as freeze dried mysis shrimp, freeze dried bloodworms, pellet would be a 1mm size floating pellet. After Aro hit the 7incn mark i start offering larger food items floating food sticks preferably Hikari, and crickets once a week. Had a Silver Aro that would pick off cut Tilapia I would purposely pin to the glass, had the water lowered for this.:)
