You can expect it to grow about 1" per month upto 12" and then it will slow down maybe reaching 18" within 2 years. They can grow huge 6ft+ in the wild but most folk I know have achieved maximum of 2.5ft.
The drawack is having a large enough tank to house it on it's own. This is not a fish that traditionally tolerates tankmates.
I have experiemented with a few tankmates and mine(10") is currently in with a 2 10" plec. The plec have had a few run-ins and are now looking a bit tatty, it's only a matter of time before I'm going to have to rehome them.
Contrary to earlier advice the South American RTC is a total different kettle of fish, the ARTC is far more agressive and will bite chunks out of your fish wheras the RTC will only swallow them if their prey can fit in their mouth.
In my opinion one of the most interesting and beautiful catfish - good luck.
