The other reason for sand is that that little guy needs little crickets and he will have a hell of time catching them when they hide in the bark and you will waste a lot of money on the crickets he can't catch! I would use sand personally, those little guys eat like 20-30 crickets a day, I wouldn't want to be putting in 70 just to make sure he gets what he needs!

Im sorry to perhapps even heat things up a bit but I disagre with both:grinno:. Any particulate substratre is dangerous at this age and with this species. Bark is dangerous because our beardy can easily choke on a peace and because is totaly inadecuate. Sand is dangerous because it can cause a deadly gastrointestinal blocage(sorry varanio ;)) Calcisand and normal sand both have it´s hazzards. I know many people keep this lizards on sand and dont have any trouble, but why take the chance and risk your lizard´s life? It can happen ! I even posted a few months ago how a close friend of mine lost a baby beardy this way and another person lost 2 leopard geckos, all to sand:( If you want to use sand, at least you sould wait until he´s at least 1,5 years old in wich age he´s going to be much less vulnerable to this. Until than use something like paper towels as substrate wich will also help whit your mite problem. I would remain suspicious about that wood chuck as being the sorce of the mites. I also think its to big for that terrarium size. If possible cut it half and put also some smod rocks, fake plants, etc. Your criter sems prety healty:D You have UV ligth? Also make shure that wood isnt from any species of pine or any other coniferos tree. Oak is fine

So in the australian outback they live in paper towels? I agree with you that calci sand is garbage and should never be used. Zoomed makes a great sand for desert dwellers and its a fine sand that can be easily digested. Either way I dont think it matters as this individual and his herpotolgist friend at the pet store feel that this is the correct way to go.

wait ive never heard of calci sand being bad. can i get some info please? it will be much appreciated.

Calci sand is a terrible substrate, its sharp and it could cut the insides of your animal when swallowed. They also hinder the proper production of urates in some species. Thats the white part that comes out with your reptiles poop.

Insults? Where? Just stating reiterating what you posted is all. Grow some skin there bud. These things are not meant to be taken personal, theyre to make you realize that you have a responsibility tied to another animals life. There was no insanity behind my advice, and the only one acting like a child here well.... is you the child.

I kept and bread them on sand for years but my babies were in the large black zip up screen enclosures with flat bricks on most the bottom.I could take them outside and hose off and they held some heat from the basking lights.I didnt keep the babies on sand just because I kept reading not to but then I was talking to sandfire dragon ranch and theirs were all in sand.I admit the little guys will try to eat anything, and I have seen digestion problems in beardeds however I dont know how to prove it was from the sand.Babies will even bite feet off their cagemates if not fed enough..............................So basicaly I dont think varanio is wrong but I personaly never had the problem.I can tell you for certain that the bark is bad.Crix will hide.Bacteria will grow. Its just very unnatural from its habitat.............................and another note, varanio is kind of the clint eastwood type of guy on here.By no means is he a sweet heart but like in the old westerns,no matter how much his sarcasm gets to you,hes the one thats gonna save the town so you better get on his side because when crap goes down you dont want him wondering what to do with you.You may gain a bit more respect for standing your ground and showing you cant be belittled but then thats it.He now knows you can stand up and fight, but now you need to respect what this man has been through and seen in his life so its time to listen because He along with us will fight for you though sarcastic at times,we wouldnt want you to loose your animal.Lay your pistola down son and trust us.We fight for you here bro,if you dont like someones atitude then dont small talk them and get straight to the points.Nows a good time to practice not getting offended much. When you get older you will see weather wrong or right at a job,the one getting offended most is usualy the one they push out the fastest. If not then you better be one hell of a worker.Good luck.Your beardy is cool,I know you do care because you thought to get bark that wouldnt fit in his mouth, unfortunatly like I do sometimes I need to change things up a bit and you waste a little cash.Just think how happy you will be after its just right and nobody can say a damn thing.
