new baby rtc help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Water changes may not fix the ammonia if there is any, especially if it hasn't gone through a full cycle yet. It could be a number of things, or it could be your catfish just getting used to their new home. They're usually hardy fish from what ive seen, but i'm not too sure at 3 inches.
You should have a good sleep and check on them in the morning. Get a test kit and let us know how you go!! :D

Welcome to the forum. Not eating right away is common. If the water's good and the change from their previous water is not too great, they should adjust quickly, from hours to a couple of days. Inverting is troubling - it's a sign that something is wrong. One must start with water tests - ammonia, nitrite, pH, nitrate, etc. How hard/soft is the water? Without knowing these first, any talk of meds etc. is unwarranted IMHO, unless, perhaps, it is known they have been doing it at the store too for some time. You will want to get a liquid test kit, not strips, like an API Master Freshwater Test Kit.

I wouldn't normally recommend meds this soon but I had a baby RTC in the past that when this started happening he was dead by lunch time the next day so IME you should act fast but all of the unknowns about water perimeters are the most important thing to solve at this point.

i spent all dry trying to find a test kit and all i found is tetra test, i just tested the tap water since i did two 50% water changes since, im going to wait 24hours before testing the aquarium since i added water from the koi pond filter to it.

ph is 7.5-8
gh is 4-5dh
kh is well i have no idea since the water had a tint of yellow of the first drop but turned real yellow at 3-4dh
no2 is less than 0.3mg/l

***this is the tap water

i couldn't find a ammonia or a nitrate test, i will try to find some tomorrow, i may have to order some from the us and that will take 2weeks might be to late then but i could start it again right before i get a new pair.

pH, GH, KH appear ok. Are you saying your test is showing some NO2? 0.3 mg/l = 0.3 ppm - usually about the lowest good liquid home tests read (0.25 ppm). If yes, it is strange, unless, of course, your well water or tap water has ammonia too.

It is a good idea to test both your source water and tank water side by side.

NO2 is a strong toxin. Fish would be uncomfortable/stressed at 0.3 ppm NO2. A concentration of ~2 ppm would kill a fish within a few days. All well-run tanks should show firmly zero NO2.

Thanks, and I have an idea of what caused it, when I got him home and in the quarantine tank I noticed he had gill curl so he must have been in poor water conditions previously and that makes me think it was some type of bacterial infection.

The symptoms was like you describe, no appetite (although I did manage to get him eating some hikari pellets) then the next day loss of equilibrium, then by the evening he was dead :(

Are yours doing any better?

You said you are from Kuwait? Do they chloronate your water? Or are you on a private well? In many US cities our water is chloronated to prevent microbial growth. It is a logn shot but it could be something to test for.
