necrocanis- I think that could be solved by putting in pond liner at the bottom- that's what i plan to do if any leaks come my way.

Mine is about 5-6'' and already getting black bars and little white stripes, but he still hasn't completely lost the juvenile coloration. I'd guess at eight inches to a foot the juvenile coloration would be completely gone, but haven't raised a TSN yet, maybe someone who has can tell you.
 
Each one is different... it depends on water quality, age, diet, tank conditions, stress levels etc... All 3 of mine have their adult colors already and are only in the 6" range but I know mine are somewhat stunted from the LFS having them and feeding them flake food for like 2 months so it's more their age that has caused their colors to come in at this size
