New Bichir Floating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So she’s acting pretty normal other than the breathing and not eating, which I expected anyway. Was gonna wait until tomorrow to post but I saw this while I was taking some fish pics today. Looks like damaged tissue or something hanging off the gill area. Nothing to worry about? Thought whatever it is may be contributing to the heavy breathing.

I suggest picking up a magnifying glass. The bichir could possibly be infected by parasites gill flukes.

Also possibly bitten by a tank mate but the heavy breathing is concerning.
Luckily I haven’t seen any aggression from tankmates.
In the case of it being flukes, do prazipro dips work? I have no QT tank (Long story) but I suppose I could dose the main tank if I need to. Never had to treat for flukes before.

How big is it? Those could just be the gills bichirs have when young

Unless you are awake at night watching them (and sleep during the day), I'm thinking it's one of the tank mates. Bichirs are nocturnal.

Prazi works best when ingested… if hes eating soak ur pellets or prepared food in it for a few feedings.

Sorry for the very late update. The guy messing with him was 100% a Synodontis I had in there. It never messed with my other bichirs for the 2 months I had them so I assumed it would be fine. I rehomed him immediately but am not seeing the Palmas’ condition improving. As you can see this kind of stuff is hanging down all down her body. Will this heal, or is it something worse?
