Very cool RR!

I'm Toby_H on Tegu Talk ;)

I second the idea of slate... I have a piece of flat rock in my '08 Varnyard Tegu's cage. She burrows under it frequently...

I didn't have issues with mine... but I've read a lot of peoplethis year are having issues with babies eating substrate, good move on using coco fiber.

Do you plan on hibernating yours? Last year my girl went down 100% on her own despite being in a 80*F fishroom at 80% humidity... and stayed down for 5 months. I was quite nervous about it but it went very smooth.

I suggest you go for a 4' x 2' intermediate cage if possible. Yours will outgrow that 40 gal real quick... but will be lost in a 8' x 4' at that point. My girl is 30" and is on an enclosed deck with her cage door open. I have been quite surprised at how little time she actually ventures out of her cage.

Mine went straight into the 4' x 2' last year when I got her, and has been fine in it all this year... next year she'll get the big upgrade...

Might as well.
When I order the 4'x2' for the beardie I'll just order one for the tegu.
I was also thinking of raising the tegu up in an Iris 175 tub
It's about 4' long and about 20'' wide. And cheap!

Hey Toby_H I didn't know you were on here! I use that big rock because I need to get him up to the basking spot. My room is unusually cold average is in the 60's at so It takes a little more to get the temps up. It's also to get him real close to the UVB bulb because it's not the best quality but im working on that;).

As for the 4X2 idea I thaught of that but I would much wrather spend all my time and money on the final cage than to constantly have to rebuild cages, just my mind set. If it's too big I will just build a divider but the way these guys grow, he will grow into the big cage quickly. And yes I do plan to hibernate him so he might be in the 40 breeder a little longer but the 8X4 will be built when he hibernates.

Yeah he's a looker! Bobby breedes the best tegus I highly reccomend him to anyone looking to purchase!

I know a guy here that keeps a pair of Tegus outside in an enclosure .

I would think that your 40 gallon tank would last some time at least min a year ?

Going by the pic lots of room .

thanks coura I will remove the rocks;). I had them in my fish tank and they looked really nice so I just put them in. And considering tegus are burrowing lizards I should really be more careful. It's kind of impossible for me to put the rocks on the bottom of the tank because there is atleast 4inches of substrate in there. Matbe I will find some wod at the petstore...
Uff good to know you took my advice:D for some reason people sometimes are a bit studborn about these things kind of "I smoked for more then 30 years and no issues, smoking its good for you":grinno:

Come on Coura it's just a couple or rocks. As long as his requirements are met I really could care less:grinno:

It very well could last a year, but I don't want to be that guy who keeps a two foot lizard in that size tank because "im working on the final enclosure". I just want to get it out of the way so it will be there. The point is his final enclosure will be set by the end of this year whether he is big enough for it or not. Better safe than sorry ;).
