Went fishing today at the local reservoir. Fishing was kind of slow but I did manage quite a few crappie and a black nose. I have heard these are kind of rare but I have probably caught at least 7 or 8 so far this year. Decided to make him a new addition to the tank.

Then I get home and check my minnow trap and have some what I'm pretty sure are rock bass a couple gills and a couple crawfish.

The bluegills in my tank tried to pick on him and he fired right up and stood his ground. Very cool to watch them interact. Crappie phone pics but hope you like.

Awesome catches? What kind of rig do you use to catch such small fish? Do you use night crawlers as bait?

For the little crappie I was using black flies I tie with #12 hook and a brass bead head. I usually use 16th or 32nd jigs with tubes but the big ones haven't movee into the spawning are yet so I played with the little ones micro style.

For the little rock bass gills and crawdad I trap them in front of my house(live on a river) with a black frabil minnow trap. I bait them with dog food in an onion sack tied up. I also use canned catfood with the lid puntured sometimes for scent trail. A couple pieces of white styrofoam thrown in also helps as an attractor. Traps can be found online, gander mountain and usually wally world. I will also siene small feeder creeks for minnows and hopefully some darters.

I like your collection of natives.. That craw looks mean as hell.. I want a few when I get my native tank up and running. Does he bother your fish at all?

Hey in the picture of the fish that you thought was a rock bass does that fish have a red eye? I can't really see in the picture.

He just raises his claws as a warning but has never bothered the fish. I have a one armed craw also and they tend to avoid each other. I noticed they were knawing on my driftwood so I dropped some celery in the tank. They love it. I also keep chunks of frozen bluegill in the freezer for them. Watched one shed/molt his shell the other day. He was out of it in about 5 seconds. Very cool to see.
