New Blacknose Crappie and more

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey in the picture of the fish that you thought was a rock bass does that fish have a red eye? I can't really see in the picture.

No red eye yet. I have put 10 or so in the tank and the crappie ate them eventually. Put one in the 10 gal to grow out some. They get very dark and don't move much. I never see them eat either. I have heard they don't do well in tanks. We have tons of them in the river I live on. Never seen a warmouth around here. Here is a fat 11 and some red eyes for ya.

It's just a black crappie with a genetic variation. Very cool looking!

Ya...just a hold over gene or something like that. I just started catching them this spring in one of my crappie holes. I didn't have my glasses on and thought it was weeds stuck to him. Tried to scrape it off with my fingernail lol. Then I did some googling. I have not caught one over 7 or so inches. Figured I would try one in the tank to see how big they get since the blacks and whites get 13 to 15 in this spot. Here are some more shots of others.

That's so cool! I've never caught or seen one before you guys posted these pics. I've heard of them but never caught one. I know some states were trying to stock these in lakes I think Florida (could be wrong).
I went to this lecture this geneticist was having and he could genetically engineer fish to be huge. He was working on northern pike supposedly was able to make them grow faster, longer, and have them weigh more. Until his research was shut down because it was said to be inhumane or something.

Those were all in my 46b. Took a couple months of.trial and error to get a good balance. Litterally 0 agression now.
Stock is
1 black crappie
1 blacknose crappie
1 golden shiner
2 silverjaw shiners
2 rusty craws
I also havr a 10g with 8 yoy gill mix. Not sure what type yet. After much experimenting I have decided to keep small yoy in a group that is easily pellet trained and have not developed their aggression yet. Then move them to their own bigger tank and weed out the males so there is only 1 and lots of females to spread aggression. Also a couple spot tail shiners in the 10 whick actually pick on the gills right now. Payback is a biotch when they grow out.

I have pothos ( golden and another) lucky bamboo growing in 46b. Plan on adding a big piece of lattice on the back of the setup for the pothos to climb. They are in the hob filter now wrapped in floss and onion bag so they can be rinsed when they clog up. Umm I need bigger tanks...but I am learning and taking it slow to make it right.

From what I have read this genetic mutatation is stocked in certain lakes because it is easier to keep track and study them.
