I have a ever growing african cichlid tank that I am working on, 55 gal now but moving to 125 gal. To help keep the tank clean, upon some MFK'er recommendation, I got a pair of BNP. They are both an inch long, a little fin nip, but nothing more then that. Now upon doing some reading about how algae isn't enough for BNP, I prepared some potatoes(only veggies I had on hand at the moment) and tossed them in.

My question is, how do you properly introduce veggies to your BNP? How long does it take for them to catch on?

I really don't want them to die off, I'm really starting to like these guys.

I have never tried potatoes and am not sure if they will eat them I feed mine greens cucumbers, zucchini, peas. No special work necessary toss it in and they'll go to town.

Deshelled peas and slice up the cucumber and zucchini they like the middle/soft parts not the skin.

They know what to do. At 1" size though you won't notice much missing from the veggies.

Also, I have two (1 black 1 white) that I got at 1" each. The black one eats veggies I put in the white one just sucks on the tank Wall. 9 months later the white one is slightly bigger (5" or so each, full grown, but the white one is fatter).

Unless he just happens to never have eaten when I check, they appear to be able to do just fine sucking on the wall.

They're probably finding other food in the tank.
I wouldn't worry about it.
Just throw the veggys in.
