Not exactly sure, but I got the same impression as Sqratch and Siciliano did, Channa stewartii sp. type?... but I'm not certain. What ever it may be tho, it is definitely a beauty! Please keep us posted w/ any new info or photos. Thanks for sharing.

nice channa stotty. Are you sure its unidentified? Looks exactly like my stewartii.

You could be right I have had stewartii in the past but never with such Blue in them as I said the picture really does not do it justice. I know 100% he is from India but all my books show them as golden and the 2 I have had before were Golden but I have heard there are some SP. ones the people I got him off of are importing all sorts of odd fish from India I know my last Channa stewartii had to hibernate and we used to shut the tank temperature right down any more information would be greatly appreciate. I will get some better pictures maybe tonight. I will get a better picture and send it off to snakeheads.org and get the top men on it.

so its got more of a blue sheen than in those pics? Then maybe you are right it might be a stewartii variant. I never knew stewartii's had to hibernate. Looks like i'll be putting my auranti and stewartii's in the same tank for awhile.

I had a Channa aurantimaculata they are a temperate species so you are suppose to keep them cooler in the winter. So you cant kept with other Channa. They have a winter temp of 19 and a summer of 25 degrees they need to shut down for winter. This was passed on to me by Snakeheads.org That’s 100% I will have to check Stewartii again the problem is at one point I only had a load of snakeheads they were the only thing that interested me and I know there were quite a few that tolerated very low temp and had to hibernate. Don’t do a thing until I get the books out again. Just been in the fish room and the body of him is a blue grey. The problem is these importers are in it just for the money the same guy had a 18” golden snakehead (well that was what he called it)so they sent it out every one was waiting to see what would turn up and when we open the box it was 2 foot of brown killer snake head when they got back to the importer he said that’s what he thought it was they really haven’t got a clue so you sit there with your books and the internet trying to work out what the hell you have now got. Look on the net it really could be a Stewarti but the ones I had were definitely not like this one.

Right Here we go Channa stewartii . Native range is about 22-27o N, indicating a warm temperate to subtropical species. The other referance i have said Temperature 22-28 C so so in the same ball park.

and sqratch why have you changed your name?

thats some great info stotty. I guess i'll just leave the fish where they are. I have a tank in the living room that is perfect for the auranti. Doesn't have a heater on it and during the summer the water gets to about 24* to 26* and in the winter drops down to about 19*. He'll be fine there until i get his outdoor pond built next summer.

Dunno just got tired of using sqratch to login to things. changed all my accounts to just my name.

his body is a blueish gray instead of a beige colour? thats pretty interesting, the 'stewartii' i have doesn't have many spots and its spots rarely show, that 'stewatii' is a blueish gray colour, for awhile i thought it was a gachua variant. but i dunno its all very confusing. I got them from the same LFS that only imported that one batch. I go back home this sunday and will try take some pics of their rays. Apparently the only sure fire way to ID sh?
