Yup, I've done it before without teachers. It took about a week of starving but he eventually took tilapia chunks. Keep in mind you don't get any trace nutrients just with tilapia filets. You'd have to stuff it with some pellets or sticks.
Thanks Rob, although to be fair - the shinyness is likely a result of the light bulb I have on that tank and the super white Home Depot sand I have a substrate.
And you're absolutely right Sashimi. I have most of my larger predators (excluding my smaller silver) on stuffed shrimp/tilapia. Every piece get 2-4 carnivore sticks stuffed into it before feeding. When he is large enough to eat bigger pieces, he will be fed the same.
Don't feel bad, man. I have given up myself on the pellet training for now, and I did have teacher fish in there. I'm now breeding convicts for feeders, just going to gut load them with the pellets instead, so he'll get both the nutrients from the fish and the pellets. Mine has killed every fish I've put in with him, so teacher fish haven't worked out in my case. My plan is the same as yours at this point, grow him out a while longer and then try again.
Welcome back Rob. I hope everything went smoothly during your absence.
This little guy is still awesome. He's put on a solid 1.5-2" and he's getting some color in his tail. Little flare of red on the bottom with a black outline on the back. Crappy camera pic below.
Hah! That means quite a bit coming from you. I will do my best to keep him happy and healthy. Can't wait for his teeth the pass cute and get to creepy.
