New camera nikon 5200. What setting?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ive got a D5100, I always use A or S as I was told this was the best way to learn but I too am pretty new to this. Your pictures look too bright to me and some of them look grainy as well what ISO are you using, ideally you should always use the lowest possible ISO required to get the photo. So that would be 100 on your camera for taking pictures of your fish. Also your framing is off and filled with equipment or multiple fish which takes focus of the desired target.

You might wanna head over to Aquatic Photography and seek some advice there. That's my plan :D

Edit: Also clean the glass prior to taking pictures.

I have a Nikon D5100. The kit lens is an outstanding lens, you're actually very hard pressed to find any lens in that focal length that will significantly outperform it. A bigger aperture would be nice, but its not really worth the extra thousand it would cost you if you're not really serious about photography.

For aquatic photography, I set my camera to M. I use 1/200th shutter, ISO 320, auto white balance and f/8-f/11 depending on where the fish is in the water column; lower f/stop for the deeper the fish is in the tank.

The fiirst key to getting GOOD photos is remotely firing your flash from above the tank.

The second key is PRACTICE.

Good luck!
