I have a 50mm f1.8D on my D50. It's the best $100 lens out there. The 1.4 is just slightly faster and has better build quality but cost a lot more. Both lens should be very sharp and should work ok for fish photos. If you'll be doing mostly fish photography or macro photography you might want to go with a macro lens like nikon 60mm micro or tamron 90mm macro lens. I have the 60mm and it's also an awesome lens.
