Sounds like your mind's made up on the canister so here's my two cents. I've got a 2217 on my 55g and I am very happy with it. Come service time I just disconnect and reverse flush it. I try to do this once every 2 weeks but it usually takes me about 3 weeks and I'm convinced I could let it go for a month and be fine. I did a lot of research before buying my first canister, I settled on the this one and I am very happy.
Ive had mine almost 3 months I think . Aren't they supposed to be able go 3 months between service ?

i have a Marineland 530. i just open it up rinse the sponge out, replace the carbon and change the floss once a month. takes about 20 minutes. and my marineland 400's i run just for extra carbon and water movement.

your just wasting your money, your waters crystal clean why would u need an extra filter. with tht money buy a bigger tank so u could add more fish :)

Yeah I'm figuring out that I've been cleaning mine way to often. Some folks service them once a year.

I clean my canisters every other week because the more fish crap you let build up in the more nitrates and nutrients build up in your water. I could let my filters go for months but I like to have the cleanest water for my fish, and clean water is not achieved by removing fish poop and uneaten food into the filter, but by taking the poo and waste out of the total system. The purpose of mechanical filtration is to keep the poo and waste in an area we can get to it and remove it froim the system... Now my thumbs are tired so I am going to stop ranting  Posted via Mobile Device

If you read my previous, it's actually the motor condition of the marineland that is leading me to replace both filters up top. I service these filters weekly and are constantly re-diagnosed upon each start-up.

I purchased an XP3 and am definitely excited about the upgrade.

dude i would go with the rena canister filters they are great i have one on my 55 i think its the xp2 and its rated for 300 gph i got it because i alos used marineland bio-wheel but when the water level would get low it would make so much noise so i got the rena and over night it cleaned the water to a crystal clear finish, haha and there was no noise from the evaporation, all in all its a good filter i only used it for mechanical and bio ( i used lava rocks) media and then i would use one of my marine land bio-wheel 330 with some carbon that i alos where i would put medic to get it turned up by a small powerhead. I would leave one chamber empty that would only be used for dosing and treatment, but i took down that setup and just started to use my marineland bio-wheels agian and i must say over time the bio-wheel filters work great and keep the water crystal clear, i also solved the noise problem from evaporation by adding an aquaclear spong infront of the return of the bio-wheel and no more noise but when it got really low then there would be more noise but all in all i think rena would be a good filter or those ehiem canister filters i think one of the ehiem comes with a built in heat, wait yes one does but cant remember the model but its pricey, hahaha

also i would like to say that you dont have to clean them everytime but sense you do that is great, sense im using my bio-wheel filters agian im using the regular filter pads and i change them every 6 months but when i buy them i cut out the back and poor the carbon ina small bag them place it in the chamber as if i left the carbon in the filter and then i needed to change the filter imlosing my bacteria colonies by doing so, so this way i can change the carbon and keep the filter floss and the bio-media plus the bio-wheel so its all goo here, lol
