I bought a CF-500UV about 2-3 weeks ago and it is my first staged filter. I had the Magnum 350 but that's a single element. My question is how long do you normally let it run initially before opening it up to maintain the very first time? I already had 2 Aquaclear 70s that were established so this was an add on. It is currently setup with a course filter and Active carbon in first tray, 2nd tray is more active carbon (I am clearing a new driftwood that was tanning), 3rd tray is Biomax, and 4th tray is 2 polishing pads. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks

usually once a month I clean my canister. Just do water changes

I always turn my filters off during my WCs, but that's partially because I drain the tank below the intake levels. As for cleaning I just pay attention to the output flow and clean the filters when it becomes significantly reduced.

Yes if I drop below the intake I'll turn it off, but I go no where near that during the changes.
When you do service the filter do not clean all the trays at once. Alternate trays between cleanings
