New catfish ID?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
These hybrids occur in the wild, fairly common fish these days...have to be careful with lfs as alot of times they really just dont know, but want your money lol... regardless, nice specimen, youll enjoy him! hope you have space/a pond for it... mine is 5yrs old and every bit of 30"....
Yea I looked at some vids of some that are a bit bigger and I think you could be right. Yea I don't believe much of what most lfs employees say but this guy has been in it for years and knows almost every fish in the trade and he has always been more than fair and very honest with me so I'm sure at least to his knowledge it is wild caught, and no I don't anything to house it at that size right now but I will have and I can upgrade to a very large tank before the end of the year and with a bit of luck a pond build is going to be starting in the next few years so he should have a huge pond soonish, thanks for your advice :)

cool, you still got your leiarius shane?

Yea a pic of your adult would be great! Thanks Wednesday :)

Jesse nailed the ID - P. fasciatum (maternal side) x Leiarius marmoratus (paternal).

Wednesday, I am jealous of yours. Mine is 5-6 years and stuck at ~2'. The pictures on PCF Catelog are of a couple of mine and of Chris the Aquaculture's - http://www.planetcatfish.com/common/species.php?species_id=4430 not great pics either. I should snap a pic of mine too and make it more interesting.

I never heard of them in the wild. I think they do not occur in the wild. They are definitely man-made as a food fish in SA in huge mass numbers.

As for what your LFS friend says, Shane, you realize of course that he didn't catch it himself. He repeats what the supplier at the point of origin claimed and even that perhaps only relates to the TSN. This hybrid might have been accidently (or not) dropped in there.
