New centerpiece for 40g

Told my mom she needed some small/medium cichlid as a centerpiece so we went to the fish store today and she fell in love with this male fire mouth. And all I have to say us this is the most beautiful fire mouth I’ve ever seen

Nice fish. From what I hear they like to be in groups but take that with a grain of salt as I’ve never kept them

They like groups but I don’t think they need them.
They do like sand to dig in though, they are like geos and sift though the substrate for food.
One of my favorite looking cichlids!

I had a group of eight if I remember right. What had happened was the males split the tank into sections. The females would them travel the tank in a group checking out each males section as they moved about.

Yea I’ve kept one in the past as a solo with other tetras like I am now. They prefer groups but won’t do any harm to keep a solo.

Never heard of sand being a must but if I have to I can add some sand to the tank. It won’t hurt anything

He’s still really shy in the new tank but came out to eat already

Update he’s now getting out and about exploring his new home. He seems to take a liking to schooling with the tetras and barbs for some reason though. I’ll take pictures in a bit
