Never heard of sand being a must but if I have to I can add some sand to the tank. It won’t hurt anything

A bit more research and you would have learned that FM sift through sand to get their food from the bottom. There's lots of information out there about this on the internet, as old as 1998.

Thank you for the information. Should I remove some gravel and add sand today.

Yep definitely swap the gravel out for sand. Try to get the smallest grain you can.
I already have a 25 bag leftover from putting sand in my flowerhorn and cave tetra tank. Would it be okay to mix the sand and gravel like I did for my flowerhorn

Full sand would be better but I can’t image that there isn’t any gravel where they live. Maybe dump the sand so it covers the gravel instead of mixing them?
Didn’t think of this for some reason lol. I’ll do this for sure

No do not just dump sand on top. Many folks have regretted doing this in the long run. If you don't want to change to all sand, then remove the rocks from the area for the sand. At the very least the area where the FM will eat should be all sand, like 1/3 to half the tank

So what if I make a kinda beach area out of sand for a “feeding pad”

yes that is what I was talking about (no rocks underneath the sand), but don't make the area too small, at the very least 1/3 of the tank should be sand (only because any smaller and it will be difficult to place the food on the sand area when you drop the food over it)
