New chick with no clue.

Ok, so the tank size is: (if I measured correctly lol) 159 Litres/ or 42 gallons/ or 35 UK gallons.
Its dimensions are: 3ftx 1.24ftx 1.50ft.
Probably a good size for a first tank I guess... Just not really sure what to put in there. I really like the look of a mangrove estuary biotope... But I think experience wise I'm a ways off that yet, so it'll give me something to work towards.
I guess I could design a cool looking hardscape? Not sure I wanna play with plants just yet... Not exactly the best when it comes to having a green thumb. Lol. Not really sure I want heaps of fish in there either- just one awesome, easy to look after fish or aquatic animal would do me for now.

As as for the fish that are available to me here, (as opposed to what you have there in the states) where/ how would I find out what I can get my hands on? Should I just do a google search? Or is there a site I can look that up on?

Thanks again y'all for your help. :)

Not being familiar with exactly what is available in Oz I would suggest you look up some local or perhaps reagional fish clubs or societies in your area, try a Google search. There are quite a few members on this forum from Australia so maybe one or two will see this thread and jump in. Obviously a 35 US gallon tank isn't going to house too much and I agree with keeping the stocking on the light side to reduce maintance and improve overall water quality. Another factor to consider is the water you will be using. What type of water do you have? Hard, soft, acidic or alkaline? Keeping fish that match your water parameters makes it much eaiser too. There are many options available once you start to narrow it down you can get a better handel on what what might and might not work for you.

Ohh I never even thought to look into the water here! I wouldn't even know how to find that out! (Hard, soft, etc)
I'm sure google will point the way! Lol
As for the rainbows... I love the idea- but they're just so... ***? (Pardon the pun lol) *** isn't the word I want- but I'm sure you catch my drift? I'm more of a weird/ unique/ miscellaneous type of fish person lol, not so much with the girly stuff. (No offence. Not that I even know of that was offensive lol. ARGH stop talking Monte!)
I would really love an octopus or some eels or stingrays or jellyfish or cool fish like that? Maybe something poisonous that not many people endevour to keep? But I don't know if that's even possible or if anyone's done it etc...

Octopus and jellyfish? If you're new to this I'd avoid jumping into saltwater right away. Besides, IMO freshwater is prettier. Whenever I go to my local aquarium I'll stare at natives for about half am hour then just pass all the salt tanks.

Love the billabong idea though! That's definitely me. Could also do the planted idea (minus the rainbows lol) and turn it into a small biotope. I wonder if a turtle would work...

A turtle, in that size tank (needs to be a pretty small species). Also if you get a turtle you wouldn't be keeping any other fish with it.

Do you have any interest in catfish, the best category of fish in the hobby?

if so I could give you a good bit of stock ideas. Depending on where you can get fish from.
here are IMO the best places to import cats from if you can where you live.

1) south america
2) asia
3) Africa
4) north america
5) Europe and Australia don't have a whole ton but I think Australia has a few.

if you like oddballs I think a single gulper catfish would be very interesting.

check out http://www.planetcatfish.com and see if any cats interest you.

some butterfly fish and a black ghost knife fish... tiger barb shoal and a nice small plec! what about an exodon tank?
