Have you considered a frilled dragon, a bearded dragon or a blue tongue skink? I think one of these may be just what you want

No such thing as green tree boas. There are green tree pythons and emerald tree boas, not sure which one your referring too. Either way, they are going to cost you upwards of 250$, probably going to required a significant amount of care. Captive breed GTPs and ETBs are actually not very bad biters at all, but wild caught ones can be pretty nasty.

$250 is probably about the limit of what I would like to spend, but not out of the question.

I realize, of course, that any herp will take a fair bit of maintenance. I just don't want something that will need to be fed/cleaned up after on a daily basis. Weekly and monthly maintenance I can handle, lights, misters, et cetera will all be automated.

A ball python would be a fantastic classroom pet. Easy to take care of (but can be picky eaters), docile, readily available. Your cage is way oversized for it- it won't use much of that vertical space- but that does give you an opportunity to decorate that space with epiphytes and such for more of a "slice of jungle" look than the typical barren snake cage.

That is definitely what I am thinking of - the spot I am thinking for the cage has an East-facing window for morning sun, good for some plants of some sort.

Geckos would be cool. I'm not really that worried about the kids, the cage is glass-fronted with a lock. Not to mention the fact that we have a 20 pound Common Snapping Turtle in the lobby of the school.

I will look up the Leaf Tail Geckos. I have seen them at the LFS, but don't know much about them.

Are they arboreal? It seems like with the height of the cage (56") it would be nice to keep something that would enjoy climbing room.

Thanks for the suggestions, I am certainly getting some good ideas to research. I will probably narrow it down to two or three possibilities and then let the kids vote.

Which High School?

Silverton High School. They built a new school a few years ago and the old High School is now vacant. Basically, anything left behind is free to be taken by any of the schools in our district. The other day my principal forwarded me an e-mail that they want to get rid of the snake cage, so I jumped on it!
