How is a picture going to be more accurate than a pore and scale count?

Sorry, Im over my head in this...but just saying.

Sweet fish btw. :D

meant to say proper species profile id pics by researchers (alive and pic taken inside a tank with colour plus pore and scale count),the pics shown are black and white and looks dead , the pore and scale count chart shown are just probabilities , quite hard to pinpoint certain species , only curupira and australis have fix pore but brasiliensis have high rate of pore count same as australis and same high rate scale count

they are sold as hoplias sp misions from G. if i remember correctly they came in with other fish from argentina.
what do you guys think they are?

If it was captured in Misiones in Argentina then it is probably australis. Lacerdae is the only other lacerdae group Hoplias in that region. will be 5 pores along the under jaw.

any more updated pic? this australis was id by Felipe ?

i was thinking is there a possibilities that there are cross breeding occurring in the river system

With the taxonomy revision on the hoplias. Here is an online copy for you to read. And discover how to id this sp correctly.

Page 22 is helpful if you know exactly the origin of the wolf. If you dont know then you can sift through this revised descrip. And be able to view the dentaries and spores etc for comparitive analysis. Jelly is correct if it has 5 pores located along side the dentaries its Australis.

i am actually referring to the chart on page 5 , guess is the only way to id it , is base on the pore and localities in the rio uruguay basin

The Australis has 5 pores while the Lacerdae have 6,7 or 8 pores. With the majority having 7 pores. I think Jelly made a typo. Most likely if its from Argentina its a malabaricus but if its from Misiones then it could then be the Australis. But you cant rely on location alone. Check the dentaries, count the pores and if possible look at the lateral line.

This is a true Lacardae from Brazil i brought in a while back. So you can see the difference.
