<< new to cichlids and new to this forum.

A few days ago I acquired a stunning paired Convict Ciclids. I have mostly been involved with livebearers and found that the Convicts tickled my fancy as being a lot more...lets say tangible pets.

I have a 2foot tank for them ready with cycled water, gravel and a nice cave with rocks and plants. The pair seems to be very shy to the point of only coming out of the cave when dark. Leading to them not eating at all. I've tried veg, ciclid floating pellets, bottom feeder pellets, flakes I have even quarantined a few guppies juvenile fish for there chomping pleasure but alas these guppies are loving there new home :screwy:

I have left the food in the tank but it doesn't get eaten and causes the water to go bad. I have done a few water changes and I have been keeping the water at a constant 27C / 80F.

Going to try some glass shrimp in the hopes that the shrimp will "visit" the Convicts in there cave for supper.

Any ideas on how to get them use to me and get them to eat.

umm bloodworms seem to never fail and shrimp seems a little big if not chopped up. Convicts have pretty small mouths unless you convicts are a bit larger

Both of them are about 90mm / 3.5 inches. Glass shrimp are pretty small but will surely try the blood worms as well thanks for replying. Do you know if them being so shy is normal in the beginning?

Well i just bought a pair to try breeding in a long 10g. Mines are active and act like big cichlids when i come see them, rushing to the tank ready for food. & yea at that size, those shrimps are ok i was thinking they were smaller like mines. Different fish have different personalities but normally cichlids aren't that shy. Umm..what tankmates do you have with them or are they only by themselves?

Yeah I was also under the understanding that cichlids are extremely active and inquisitive. The only other tank mates are those tiny Guppies (aka food). The fish comes out when all lights are turned off. So they seem so have a personality issue O.o ?

hmm maybe they just are scared try feeding them with the lights off. It might just take a bit longer for them to adjust to eating with the lights on.

The bloodworms seems to have done the trick they have been loving them. They still a tad shy when I am around but hopefully that would be slowly dissipate over time.
I hope I can get them to eat pellets though in the future. Thanks again for your efforts in helping me.
