I have replaced all my filters in the fishroom with Aquaclear but I did have Aqueon filters for a bit. You can use the sponges sold for AC filters or any filter sponge really. I have bought sponge material for sumps and cut them to size. Aquaclear uses a basket of sorts to direct the water through the sponge that is placed at the bottom of the basket and then up through what ever other media is added. With the Aqueon filter I put the sponge vertical on the right hand side and the other media material on the left hand side. I insert enough sponge that it fits front to back and low enough that if it clogs the water won't overflow the filter.
I have a 20G long used for quarantine. When looking for a HOB I liked Aquaclear based on the basket and potential configuration of filter. Bottom up, provided sponge, my filter floss, my little ceramic in mesh bag. I suppose I could flip the layer of ceramic with floss. I tossed the other stuff.
