New Cuda

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
damn man, that's a beefy cuda. It looks like an acestro, but I've never seen an acestro that looks quite like that.

Is it one of the rarer acestro species? What size is it?

Awesome fish. Definitiely not an acestro. Looks like the fish that John (ECZS) was recently selling as Brycon dentex. After much debating I don't think anyone could really come up with a positive species ID.

Thanks for the info guys. It DOES look to be the fish ECZS was selling.

It doesn't seem to be aggressive towards tankmates, just tries to school with anything. I think he confuses my other fish because he looks aggressive and will quickly swim towards another fish just to align parallel and school, he really freaked out a female cobra pike:ROFL: .

Had him in a tank alone for over a week and he wasn't eating. Put in 2 red hooks and he started feeding in 5 minutes. Now he's just an aggressive feeder, especially with his speed, and will eat anything the red hooks do, from frozen shrimp to krill/pellets and flakes.

its not acestro. Its Brycon dentex. Some people DO call them Red Tail Barracudas... just another common name, which obviously could create confusion. I have 4 of them. Mean as HELL. Scale eaters, at least to a certain extent. They will harrass and attack fish much larger than they are (my 3" one will dive-bomb my 10" ATF). ITs not that they will tear something up right away, they just pick it to death. They are nasty fish. But, for the most part, they are most agressive to each other... they constantly harrass each other. Non-stop violence, but nothing to dangerous. Just some knicks, scratches and cuts constantly.

Some people have said these are Oligosarcus spp. They are not. For one we know for a fact they get over 12"... in fact I know a person who had one over 14". SEcondly, color is not quite right. Finally, they are collected in Ecuador (mine were at least) and Oligosarcus are found much farther South and East... not in Ecuador. Brycon dentex are from Ecuador region.

They chew things up... like their food in pieces (like chunks of shrimp, chunks of fish, pellets). They do not swallow fish whole like acestrorhyncus. THeir teeth, though defnitely visible and used, are not as prominant as an acestro. They kind of have the character and attitude of mini-dorados.

NICE FISH. Enjoy it. Get a few more.

Sometimes they are labeled as Ecuadorian barracuda. Had one that was vicious.

These Brycons remind me of a african pike and dorado mix.. Heard they are pretty aggressive as well

Wow....resurrected thread.
1 Year ago, countless fish...
That tank has gone through many changes and many fish from the far reaches of the world...

Thanks for the memories. BTW, this fish is in another home now (of course). Wouldn't mind getting a larger 11"+ specimen to swim with my 11" Odoe. Great fish get one if you can.
