I'm impressed. You remind me of myself at 16. Can you imagine trying to get some info on your fish or anything else for that matter without the internet? Lots easier nowadays! I bet I have a library of 50+ books just related to fish. Your doing good. It's all just trial and error. I have two teenage daughters that are your age. The older one is 17 and they both have multiple aquariums with predatory fish in their room also. Over the years I have kept probably 20-30 Hoplias malabaracus. 99% of the time they minded their own business, just as you said. The only time I can remember having some issues with them was in 2006 when I bought a small group of them at about 3-4". They were in a 6'/2'/2' 180 gallon tank and they chased each other and beat each other freaking constantly. Nothing I did seemed to have any effect on the way they acted. I just ended up breaking up the group. One of my buddies is a lawyer and has one of them in his tank in his office with a large Black Arowana that I gave him as well. The mala is about as big as your forearm and probably 16" long. It just sits on the bottom like a piece of driftwood like most do until he feeds them. I'll try to get some pictures of it to post. Good luck.

Thank you. Must have sucked. I'm really onto fish and animals for that matter but mainly fish now. Ever since I was small I've always loved animals. I wanted to become a veterinarian, now that I'm older I want to be an icthyologist. And Internet does make it much easier. I use to not have access to it and only went off of what I could find on tv. Wasn't until I had access that I got into fish really and it honestly changed my life. I found myself finishing homework faster just to stare at my ta k for hours. Now I work at an lfs. Going on a month as I just turned 16. But since I've been going since I was maybe 10 they let me work a little before hand. And I'm hoping for one of these malas to be like my previous 13" one. He would move much but he floated all day long in the cent of the tank waiting for food. Became diurnal I believe. Doesn't make much sense but he adapted after about a year. And that's cool I hope to grow one as big as that eventually in a larger tank. Mist have taken years. I was actually curious of black arowanas, though I wouldn't dare keep one at this point. I've probably read every thread with these fishes name in it. I've been reading all day most of the time since 5th grade about many fish sp. And thank you. I've got some better pictures of the curupira but on my ipad my wifi should be back up tomorrow so hopefully I can post them then. I've had luck comm fish many say shouldn't over the years . I feel you just have to find the right mix.

Black Arowana are one of my top 5 fish. Had lots of them. They ,like most S.A. fish like soft, aged water. I use oak leaves and branches to soak in my rain barrels to get the water softer. Sounds to me like you could keep one ok at this point in your fishkeeping career. Just a little pricey nowadays. Use to, you could get a 3" Baby Black Arowana for $25-30.00. About $100.00 now. I've kept them with Wolffish successfully a bunch of times. Only when the arowana is 2-3x the size of the Wolffish though. Your Black Curupira is will tame down and realize that you are it's food source shortly. The waiting is terrible. I'm glad the Aimara Wolffish that I bought from Wes came out of the bag ready to go at any comers. I was scared about getting one that was extremely spooky , like I've read about. Surely yours won't take long to get right. Just beware of feeders, they can get your fish sick faster than a 2 dollar woman of ill repute. The feeders may look fine, but trust me looks can be deceiving. Learn from my mistakes and get your Wolffish on non live foods ASAP. White market shrimp raw gets them to eat faster than most everything. Try tapping on the top of the tank pretty firmly immediately before you feed your Wolffish. After a couple of weeks, it will associate the tapping with food and come up. Right now, try and bend a wire coathanger into a feeder stick with an L at the bottom where you can stick the shrimp or whatever onto it at. Easier to get the food in it's face that way. The tapping works and so does the feeder stick. Trust me. Only other thing is keep up with your water parameters and do water changes often. I'm sure you will, you've got lots of energy, right? Lol!!! Good luck.

I usually have luck with getting fish off of live. I actually threw in some freeze dried krill and saw the curupira go up and take some a couple times but it was late already, had to go to sleep. It always sucks when you have to tell yourself enough of watching lol. But malas seem to have always been easy. And I quarantine them for a while and fatten them up. Feed the goldfish prior for extra nutrition lol. Seems to be the way it works. But the bigger mala I got a little recently and is a little thin it seems. The little guy is fat but small. I was wondering if I should start to starve him or not. He's growing quite fast I've only had him for about 3 weeks when I acquired him at 1.5 inches and thin. He grew quickly eating same sized guppies. He ate a same sized Jardin too, quite upsetting but I'd take this wolf over the jar now lol. Did it over night came home to tail out the mouth and a fat wolf. My stupidity as the jar was thin as I had just gotten it. The bigger one I'll see once I feel he's thicker I'll do so. And lol energy? I have to have it at this age right? Lol not with work and school. I wake up at 6 to get home by 2:30, then take care of my dog and the fish if they have any needs, then eat and get dressed and leave for work at 3:30 which ends up being later sometimes, then I get out at 8 but it's across town so I don't get home till, depending on traffic, 8:30-9. Then eat take care of the animals and take a shower and go to sleep and repeat for the next few days. Mon - Thurs.
