New Dad at 111 Years Old!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tumor on his genitals? No wonder he was grumpy.

Yeah, 250 years seems a bit much but with their low temperature range and slow metabolism (1 year gestation in such a small animal, wow) over a century is no surprise. Tuataras are cool.

I'd thought they were squamata alongside lizards, snakes, amphisbaenids etc but I haven't looked at reptile classification in a looooong time.

Aren't they in a different superorder, like the relations of crocodilians to lizards?

Yeah you're on the right track, they're the only survivers of the order Sphenodontia alive today.

Rhincocephalia for that matter also;) Their increadeble:D The fertilization its more similar in what happens in some salamanders then in lizards

I watched it the other day and the title was father at 111 years
I was quite surprised at the fact it was a lizard
also with the whole thing about the age they can reach I would have to say it is probly possible as we can't be sure on how old other lizards are and all the ones that were 150+ may have been killed for leather
True now living lizards dont reach that kind of age;) The longest living are probably the ground iguanas of the genus Cyclura wich can reach possibly more then 50years old. Tuataras as above stated are not lizards, they are Rhincocephalians:D and the 2 living are the last ones of their once very diverse kind wich reached its top diversity during the triassic period just before dinos diversified themselfes and ruled the earth. Long extinct forms included not only land dwelling short bodied species like now adays but also tree dwellling and even marine ones;)
