I purchased a 10-11'' Indo Datnoid, about 24 hours ago, is it normal for them not to eat within the first couple days? and How long do i have to starve them until it gets unsafe? What does it mean when the datnoid puts its spikes up and extends his mouth? yawning kind of? And can you keep this size datnoid with smaller datnoids like 2-3''? THANKS :grinno:

Yeah it is normal, they can go 2 to 3 months without eating at that size. Mine yawn every now and then..it is just them clearing out their gills. Having larger dats with smaller dats is fine and I do that all the time.

It's normal an indo that size to not eat for a few days when I introduced to new tank. Some take days, sone take weeks before they eat.

When the spikes go up, it means they are usually
Displaying to warn other fish. It also happens when they extend there mouth out / looks like yawning. Not sure why they do this, but it loops like they are having stretch lol.

It can take a couple of weeks before you get it to eat. Do you know it's previous diet?

thanks. Wow thats a long time without food. i'll also think about getting other dats or quick eating fish to make him wanna go at it. do you have any suggestions?

That's fine. If it doesn't take pellets right away, there are some trick that you can use to get it on pellets besides the starving method. Some have suggested stuffing the pellets into shrimp when you feed it, or soak the pellets in with the shrimp so it gets that aroma, starving, etc.

would you happen to know what it means when the datnoid swims sideways on the bottom of the tank and then jerks back? like a strong twitch? i have barebottom.
