New DELL computer, what should I get?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
tigerdirect is excellent. I also get a lot of stuff off ebay for laptops and desktops. For my laptop, I got 4GB of ram for $50 including shipping, taxes and duty. It was pretty sweet. Staples wanted 80 bucks and tax a piece for 2GB sticks. aka 160 and tax for what I got off ebay for $50

you should buy a mac ;)

If your going to be students get windows office package, IDK if they still do it but they used to have a pretty good discount for students, comes with Power point, word ect ect...it will make student life pretty easy whenever you have to make presentations. Which is great for your core class's..gov. history, public speeking, english comp ect ect. but Office may or may not be helpfull depending on what your going to school for, medical programs...not so helpful..

I've had a lot of people tell me that.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm not sure I could build my own computer. Really wouldn't know where to start.

The reason I decided on DELL computers is the company I work for buys nothing but DELL. They all recommended it for a home PC. Of the 30+ computers they have I figured they would be trustworthy(but they're all civil engineers and tend to be really dumb in certain areas, lol). I did read some of the ratings on DELL's website and 80% of them complained about overpriced software packages and various other overpriced upgrades.

I tried building my own, on their site and my total was like $2000 for just the tower and printer, no monitor. But I'm bad about going for the best in each option because I don't want to regret anything after purchasing.:grinno:

I think I might go to BEST BUY today and try to pick their brains on what areas I can skimp and what I should go for the gusto on building my own.

I don't suggest macs for university. I had to use one for some lab work and I hated it. not just me, most people were very upset about it. But I am in sciences, so I have no need for a lot of the art programs that macs are known for.So, Unless ur in an graphic art course. They have some great programs for that.

They can get viruses btw. I'm not sure why someone said they could not.
Not as many viruses, but if you are not stupid online and have a good anti virus, you will be fine with windows.

I know many people, mostly CS students that go mac and partition the mac to xp/linux/vista until they can go back to windows or linux.
Most programmers I know get a windows computer and just partition it to have the mac OS and linux OS.
You get all worlds that way, its great for creating videos.

Anyways,
just ask lots of questions. :)

Best of luck

Barebone kits are so easy to put together...Everything just snaps into place. All you have to do is screw the motherboard down to the tower and snap/install everything else on it. Like i said, i only paid 270 bucks and my computer never misses a beat.

you could be right about about the university/lab part.... my girlfriend has no problems though and loves it at school. she is now a mac user after being a pc user all her life.

as for viruses, they are VERY rare and are not as fatal. i dont even think any have hit OS X yet

we have never had a virus in the 25 yrs we have used macs

I have only seen a few myself. NONE on the OS, but its that myth that MACS can't get viruses which makes certain users believe that can do anything without fear of viruses. I have never had a virus on any of my computers. It has not been 25 years ( I am younger than that haha)

Most viruses and spyware depend on the users, lol
