Hello everyone, i just took down my salwater tank and i have decided to make it a planted discus tank!!!!

first of all i need to know what are the right type of lights to grow live plants in freshwater. My light fixture has two pins on one end and there is two plugs to plug in the bulbs i had a blue and white light i believe they were 10,000k

also anyone have ides on what fish to put in there besides discus

thank you any help is great

Make sure you do lots of reading on planted tanks. They can be more trouble than helpful.......

You can use 10,000k lamps for plants. Anything from 5000k to 10,000k will work pretty good. If you put Discus in a planted tank, make sure they are adult fish. Juvie fish will stunt easily, especially in a newly set up tank that is a bit unstable. You don't really need other fish besides the discus. They look great on their own. Other fish with them only increases the chance of disease transmission. IMO, planted tanks and discus are one big PITA when combined. To each his own.

What is PITA and do the plants make the water unstable i dont understand why plants would stunt there growth

Also does anyone know what type of substrate would be the best for plants. One more thing is, i was told at my LFS that you dont need CO2 systems anymore you can put a few types of liquids in the water that will give the plants oxygen and nutrients is this really true

Plants themselves don't stunt discus. It's all the wastes that get trapped in substrate, under plants and decor that do. That's why you should use adults that are finished growing for a planted tank. That way there will be no stunting.
