I don't like ceramic rings because they get clogged and dirty. essentially, they become prime area for waste accumulation.

To reduce that issue, the water must be well filtered and the waste material removed before the water reaches the ceramic rings.

Based on the picture, I don't see much effective means of removing that waste mechanically before the water reaches the ceramic rings.

the water looks sparkly clean inside the 55 gal so im not worrying about the waste getting in too much. and eventually if it does ill just rinse the rings periodically.
ive seen pictures that neo posted a while ago. of some japanese tanks which were just packed with ceramic rings.
if it works for them. hey why not.
