Could i just srubs the ever living crud out of the wood powerwash it and then soak it in some normal water within the tank like i was doing?

I really do not know why you are freaking out over it. Leave it alone or vacuum it off during water changes, and it will go away as quickly as it came. Check out this thread:

I have always heard to boil it to kill off any thing harmful that may be living in the wood. Boil, rinse and repeat till water does not turn brown. I know... next delima... a pot big enough to get the wood in.... heard of using a 50 gallon barrel cut in half and building a fire!
