Any ideas on what I should use for the substrate? I have used wood chips in the past and I didn't like it. So my plan so far is rubber wood chips.

I used a mix of sand/soil/peat moss. Looks good and is easy to clean. Id stay away from rubber in case of accidental ingestion and it being so dark.

From the looks of it I think the enclosure should be atleast triple this size. I can see the caiman in the pics and it looks like a jail cell to me. Not trying to sound negative but look at it from the animal's perspective. You need large enclosures for these animals or don't bother keeping them.
