I just bought a tiger shovel nose cat this afternoon. I dont know anything about them really except they get rather large and look neat. Some info from the community would help. How big is big? big like my dovii or big like my 540 will be to small? he looks really cool but i wont plan on keeping him if hes going to get over 2.5ft. any feeding tips or fish you would keep him away from ? you can see what i have in my 220 (what hes in) Any other usefull info THANKS!

As far as what you can and cant keep him with, dont put him with anything that he can fit in his mouth because there is the possiblity that he will eat it. The 2 larger ones (around 8") that I have love silversides and prawn. If he is used to live food he might not accept this right away, but after 3-4 days of not eating they will switch over. Also try feeding right before the lights go out. As for my baby whos about 2" he loves black worms, and also eats shrimp pellets. You might have to place these foods in front of him if he is this size because he might not be able to eat before his tankmates do. With the black worms, just get a fork full and place them right in front of him and he should stuff himself. Also beware that these guys grow very fast and he will outgrow his tankmates quickly.

He should be ok in your 540 as long as it is at least 3' wide, also put a powerhead in there for him cause they love to swim in the current. Be carefull when you are cleaning the tank or moving other fish because they can be startled very easily and can injure themselves by hitting the glass.

yes mine is the same size. tiny.2" tops easily the smallest fish in the tank. and yes getting food is kinda a concern to me as you can see his tank mates... none of them are shy about eating. black worms are blood worms? I actully have those growing in my gravel(i have a 5-6" bed) so hopefully he may shovel his way around there and get some. i dont think putting in front of him will help much as i know my oscars will push his little butt right out of the way. do you think he will be ok in my 220? how big do they really get? the 540 is 3'x3'x8'. so im sure that will be big enough but i dont know if he will be able to hang with my dovii and jags when they grow out. my 220 is going to be for the less aggressive big guys.(i have an asian arrow on the way, he gets the tank to him self and a few others i will CAREFULLY choose) do you think the big parachromis will leave the cat alone? as far as feeding before the lights go out do you think i should just litter the gravel with pellets then switch out the light? im just concerned about him finding it as he always seems to be at the top of the tank. are they aggressive at all? will he bother an arrow if i can leave him in the 220? any thing else i should know? thanks for the help. your list of fish is comforting that you know a lot more then i will in this subject. thanks again.

lets see a pic of the tank you will be putting it in when it gets to 3ft+

I wouldnt be too concerned with him as he gets older and larger with your SA cichlids, he should be fine. I have mine (8") with a ven pike that is 6" and he does fine ( the ven pike beats the hell out of my 15" royal knife). I dont know what a parachromis so i cant tell you if he would be ok with that. The only thing is if the cichlids nip at his wiskers. As far as a 220 he would last for a while in there, but would definately outgrow it. He would have to go in the 540 eventually.
These guys can get over 3' long and are extremely fast growers. How big are the fish he is in with now? He will probably outgrow all of them quickly, but if they are too big he could become somebodys meal.

Black worms are not the same as blood worms, but they should be fine as well. If he is at the surface all the time try to put a few worms on a fork and place it so his wiskers touch them. He should gobble them right up. How big are your oscars? Try to feed them before the little guy, and then dim the lights before you feed him.
