That's your problem right there. You should have a filter rated for 60g or more on that tank. Just get another of what you already have and you can buy the same media for both. Ammonia or Nitrite can spike sharply for short periods of time if you're overfeeding or something and by the time you test the water it seems fine. How much are you feeding? Are you using a good dechlorinator when you do waterchanges?

Ya it all depends on how much they are (I shouldve asked when i was there lol) if there to much I might bite the bullet an spent 60.00 on a SYNODONTIS MULTIPUNCTATUS since they had a few of those there as well.

having double the filtraion for a tank is good filtration, i have a fluva 4o4 and a aq 600 internal filter on my 75g, and im still planning on geting another canister filter(i think HOB filters suck and wont even use on on my 10g convict breeding tank)
i hope your fish make it, what you should do is a 75% water change, use the gravel vac, and add salt to a bucket of water while you are filling it up. then do 25% water changes everyday till it clears up and hopefully it will
