Ah, yes..............Polypterus Ornatipinnis, or more commonly known as Ornate Bichir.

The Ornate polypterus, Polypterus ornatipinnis, originates from the Zaire basin in Africa and is also found in Lake Tanganyika. These fish inhabit large rivers and lakes as well as swamps where they have developed an accessory breathing organ for surviving the dry season when water levels are at their lowest and dissolved oxygen isn't plentiful. During these difficult times, when many fish annually perish, the Polypterus, like the lungfish, can continue to thrive.

No really though......... I was reading about them and it said that they prefer sand or smooth rocks for substrate, would they be alright in a tank filled with that coarse african cichlid substrate?

i have used all kinds of substrates for polys. There skin is like armor.I am sure that polys would prefer a smoother substrate.Maybe one of your other set ups could have a poly?Or like sticky suggested an oddball tank.
