new fast U.S. navy warship

honestly it's about time the navy has incorporated a fast multihull vessel like the independance into its warship arsenal, the benefits of trimaran civilian pleasurecraft have been recognized for decades.
I don't think a ship like this will help combat piracy directly though, the pirates being encountered are so successful because of their ability to split up in multiple smaller craft and regroup on shore, a single large, fast vessel will still have a hard time pursuing multiple smaller if slower craft. The aspect the vessel has of a fast moving helicopter carrier could very well negate this, a pair of blackhawks coupled with the armament you'd expect from a vessel this size would be more than devastating against the pirates in Somalia and southeast Asia. But I'm not an Admiral, there is probably a lot more to this new weapon than the article spells out.
I would suspect that the two spaces between the hulls of the Independance could also house and carry a respectable number smaller +-20 foot fast attack craft, but that's not something the navy to make public.
I think it goes without saying that I find the Independance to be the more interesting and innovative of the two new designs, based solely on this article... I'll read more on this.
