This is not something new to the USN. The Navy used to have a group of ships in the Pegasus Class. They achieved 51+ knots on foils, were armed with a 76mm mount and 8 harpoon missiles. The PHMs were decommissioned 2 decades ago as "being unnecessary in fulfilling the Navy's mission".

this boat's capable of moving in shallower water than most vessels of similar size, which also helps when trying to capture pirates using smaller craft.
