That is a juvenile female. The dark coloration when you got here was stress related. Both male and female will get the pseudo canine teeth. The males more predominant. Good luck. One of my favorite Parachromis fish.

If the black line doesn't start to fade in a few months it's probably a female. That's the earliest sign I can think of to look for.

Sorry to hear about that. It seems like getting and holding onto a female is pretty tough to do. I'm having a pretty hard time just finding one.
