Hey guys, I got this little FH a couple weeks ago and was told it is a red dragon. A friend if mine got it from a breeder on aquabid. Can anyone confirm what it is? Its around 2 inches and has a lot of red, it's hard to see really great in the pics because he would t stop moving!! Anyway, any info would be great!

FH looks OK. Trouble is, and don't take this the wrong way, a FH really shouldn't be in a tank with Mbuna. It's your tank, but IMO this is not a good idea.

He's only there for a little bit till his big enough not to get eaten lol. Don't worry he holds his own with the best of them, plus they almost never mess with him. I was thinking some kinda zz as well, guess time will tell :). He just caught my eye because of all the color for his size. Plus the last week or so his getting a nice little hump on his head :D.

Its not always trouble.

Yes, alot of FH are aggressive, but I have seen many, many in community tanks, especially if they grow up together.

We have a local breeder around here that keeps FHS and Red Devils with his Jardini with 0 aggression.

Just have to watch how they act and have a backup.

+1 Central America cichlids have very similar water needs to the Rift Valley cichlids. Hard part is diet... Everyone is getting nls cichlid. He will have a new tank when he's around 4 inches.

Update: it's so hard to get a good pic on my phone!! I had no idea how fast flowerhorns grow. He has easily doubled in size in a month. I would say 3 inches already. He's put on some serious body size too. Color changes with his mood and size of the kok. He'll be in the big tank in no time! Sorry again about the pics, I would use a camera but its broke :(

Update: it's getting a ton more pearl. Lot more red and the fins are getting darker. I would say its around 3 1/2 inchrs now. Big plus his head is getting bigger :). Took a few pics let me know what you think. I know his fins are messed up, but he keeps fighting the mbuna lol. Gettin mean!!!

Why do you have him with Africans?
Flowerhorns should be kept alone really

no they shouldn't, they can thrive and be fine in a tank with hardy fish...it's just that majority of them are nasty to tank mates that are the same or a slightly bigger in size, or don't have a similar aggression. And most people keep them with a couple fish. You can try and if it don't work separate, that's what I do. I have my bonsai fader who is a jerk, but once he gets checked he leaves my other fish alone. He's been with my texas, jags, and tinfoils. As long as the fish can hold it's own the flowerhorn will typically leave them alone. Golden rule, if you want a flowerhorn to have a possibility with other fish, make sure the fish you put him with are double his size, or larger depending on species and get a fair amount of fish.
