New FH

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I actually think africans would be more compatible than most sa/ca's because the flowerhorn wouldn't view them as much of a threat (or be able to catch them very easily lol). I've had FH that were great with tankmates and others who wouldn't tolerate them at all so it all really comes down to the individual fish and situation. My 10in alpha male srd tried killing all of his siblings so he was kept alone for the last year but he's doing fine now with my big pacu in a 240. She doesn't take any crap from him tho after being chased around by my old dovii for the last week, now if the fh bothers her she just turns around and tries to gobble up his trailing dorsal fin. They're so big and slow it's like watching 2 turtles fighting lol. U definitely have a red dragon btw in case you're still wondering. Kok started growing a lot more in the last few weeks too

Your FH will do a lot better in a tank of its own where it doesn't have to constantly fight with the Africans. From the looks of it, they aren't backing down either. Very nice progress!

Thanks for the input guys. I had to put him in there for now because he was way to small to put in my 120 with the larger fish. Right now he's doing good with the Africans, only one really messes with him and your right they don't back down. Time will tell if he needs his own tank, which I'm ok doing. But he will be over powered till he's at least 6 - 7 inches so I've got a few more months lol. Very fun fish! Bites me everytime I clean the tank, and eats the food out of my hand to keep the others from stealing it lol. Can't wait to see his mature colors, almost like he's changing everyday. Any guess on sex? I keep saying he but I'm not 100%sure I'm just going on the size of the head and body shape.

no they shouldn't, they can thrive and be fine in a tank with hardy fish...it's just that majority of them are nasty to tank mates that are the same or a slightly bigger in size, or don't have a similar aggression. And most people keep them with a couple fish. You can try and if it don't work separate, that's what I do. I have my bonsai fader who is a jerk, but once he gets checked he leaves my other fish alone. He's been with my texas, jags, and tinfoils. As long as the fish can hold it's own the flowerhorn will typically leave them alone. Golden rule, if you want a flowerhorn to have a possibility with other fish, make sure the fish you put him with are double his size, or larger depending on species and get a fair amount of fish.

Look at the poor Fh his fins are all tore up and his color is not so great.
Why are you guys telling the op its okay

I don't think he's doing good, considering the ripped/tattered fins. Your fish is a male.

Well he's been in the bigger tank now for a month. Seeing a lot more color and a little growth. He's doing good with other fish for now, but he's the smallest fish in the tank. Fins are growing back and over all he's doing great. Love the personality on these fish.
