NEW FILTER HOW LONG TILL I CAN REMOVE THE OLD ONE

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It would probably be safe wait a week or two for the new one to grow enough beneficial bacteria before removing the older one. But, I would just take the media from the old one and throw it in the new.

x2 take the media and put it in new filter. if not i would suggest at least three weeks to be safe. i did it after 2 once and had a bad nitrite spike and killed some fish. (my bad)

Do you mean ammonia spike? Also, thanks for the correction about it being 3 weeks. I don't know the exact time frame since I always just use media from established filters.

if you have plenty of bio media in the original filter just move it to the new one. I wouldnt wait ten minutes personally. The bacteria can grow in numbers to support the bioload quickly if the media is already cycled.

I just got a canister filter iam giving my dad the power filters that wer hanging on the back is ther any way to transfer the bac to the canister from the power filters

Yes. Squeeze the old media out in the actual aquarium and the cloud of live bacteria will go into the canister. It's not perfect because a lot of the cloud will end up in the mechanical filtration instead of colonizing the bio, but it will prevent a mini-cycle in most cases.

+1:iagree:

You want to take the current media an squeeze the mulm out it... (mulm out of it.. lol)

make that tank as dirty as you can.. after a good 12hours the water will be crystal AND you should have a semi cycled filter
