I recently pitched the old carbon cartridge from my Fx4, and I now have an extra basket in my filter. I want to add another media to the filter, but I'm not sure what I should go with. I have coarse and fine filter sponges in the first basket, and (I believe) zeolite in the second basket. I don't have a large fish load in the tank, just a few small fish. I do, however, have many, many plants. I'd like something that will polish the water similar to carbon, but lasts longer. Should I go with some filter floss, another set of sponges, or another solid media similar to the zeolite?

Have you checked out Seachem Purigen? I started using it in my tank a week or so ago and I am amazed at how clear my water is now. What's really nice about it is that it is rechargable so you should be able to get a year or two out of it before you need to purchase more.

The Eheim substatpro is great stuff. But the real question is, what are you looking to get? Clearer water, better mech, or better bio filtration?

If you're currently happy, there's nothing wrong with leaving the basket empty and enjoying a higher GPH.

He has a point, Unless you havent tried purigen then give that a shot :) Dont mix it with most water conditioners other than prime though.

I don't really want a higher flow rate, it messes with my plants. I'm just looking for something to scrub the water a little. I want it to *sparkle* :naughty:. What would be the best bang for my buck?

Never heard of a Fx4. I heard of a Fx5 and then there is the 405, 404, 403 line of canisters, are they refered to as a Fx4?

Oops, brain fart!!! :nilly: I was thinking of the rena xp4. Maybe it is a cross between the rena xp4 and the fluval 404. :naughty:

Rena makes XP3, XP4, XP5. My mistake, I always forget the names of my filters. The '3 has 2 baskets, low flowrate. The '4 has 3 baskets and medium flow rate. The '5 has 4 baskets and the highest flowrate. It's a great filter, I had it up on my 34 at first and now its on my 55. I keep it turned down a little until cleaning time, then I crank it up for extra turd-sucking power. My "monster" tank doesn't quite measure up to most, so I'm not too surprised everyone doesn't know about the smaller filters. Rest assured, when the time comes for my bajillion gallon tank to be built, I'll be hitting everyone up for info and suggestions for sump design and overflows and whatever else goes into those big ass tanks!

Thanks for the suggestions!
