Hahaha I think you are confused. The XP4 is the largest one, there is no XP5; Do you have that or a fluval FX5?

Since you don't have any actual biomedia in the rest of the filter, I think you might as well put some ceramic rings or whatever in the basket. Fluval biomax, eheim
ehfisubstrat, etc.

From what I have read, purigen is like reusable carbon. I've never used it.

Yup. Way confused. I have XP3. All I know is I got it for $90 (a few months old) with a 34H tank, hood, lights, heater, gravel, fish, and stuff for amphibians. Not a bad deal! I'll look into something along those lines after the next couple of paydays (research at USF doesn't pay much).
