New Filter Upgrade - Switching To Fluval Canister

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I tend to use HOB's over canisters for my tanks, out of preference and just having an abundance of unused "starter kit" units. I think HOBs can do an excellent job if you use multiple units and tweak the inside with foam/floss/gravel/etc. The stock internals on most HOBs are definitely mediocre out of the box though

Yeah, hopefully the two work well! I should at least have the cleanest 20 gallon tank ever for now 🤣🤣.

A few years back I went all googly eyes over the FX series of filters and got some. Great filters except the PITA to clean part of it. So sold them and switched up to double Aquaclears. Best thing I ever did. So much easier to clean, so you do it more often since it only takes 5 minutes and some tank water. I also don't use the carbon and just fill the space with more bio-rings.
Atm I have a 40breeder with double AC50s.

Alright, I am back to nowwwwww a Fluval 307 LOL! Ok, hear me out though.....I know I have been absolutely all over the place.

I literally read and watched everything I could for the best possible filtration method for an aquarium. Now, everyone has their own opinion of course so to each their own, BUT this is what I settled on and what makes the most sense to me.

The more I learned....I wanted a current flowing through my tank length-wise, not dropping down from above like from a HOB. I found a GREAT video I posted below and really like a lot of this guy's stuff. It makes perfect sense too if you think about everything he says about wavemakers. Filters are going to be 1000% more efficient if you can keep the water moving to/around them!

Intake a few inches from bottom in back corner, output right beside it facing length-wise towards the opposite end of the tank. Wavemaker on same end as intake and output flowing the same direction as well but aimed at the surface some to add some ripples/oxygen (bonus).

If needed, 2nd wavemaker on bottom of tank on opposite end pointed back towards intake.

Goal is a circular flow throughout the tank with no dead-spots. I really liked this thinking and have settled on this for my setup!

Have been running Marineland canisters for a long time. Recently, one of them crapped the bed after a power outage. Replaced it with a Fluval 407 due to unavailability of Marinelands in my area. Was skeptical at first, but now I’m sold. All the Marinelands will be replaced.
