update

right guys it seems my cycle is taking way longer than expected i thought i might be able to get it round in a week, i was wrong. as i filled the 2260 with the old media to get it goin but it seems that was not enough were up to about the 3 week mark now and no real changes in situation i have done everything every one told me like,
1 shortening the hoses for a direct run
2 sorting out the stacking order of media
3 feeding less

im guessing it still needs time cycling looking more towards the 4 to 5 week mark,
havnt lost any fish yet and dont think i will thank god ut it is strange how i have been getting poor amonia readings without any real affect on the fish for example stuff like my fw moray is fine even though they are really needy when it comes to water parametres which i find really strange.

today something also happened which is strange my ammonia is still high at about 3ppm but my nitrites have dropped quite dramatically this is meant to happen the other way round any ideas there?

and the water is still quite yellow i guess this is still due to the bloom or at least i hope it is as i want it crystal clear.

have started doin 25% water changes twice weekly for the last two weeks but like i said dosnt seem to be haing any real affect, maybe im just being impatient.

any ideas guys
anyone had similar experience please lend a hand if you can
many thanks

I'm glad you were able to address the hose & media stacking issues on the 2260.

How many & what kind of fish are in this 100G tank? I see you have a FW moray eel.

What kind of sand are you using for your substrate?

Do you have any driftwood in this tank? That may be why your water is yellow.

Normally, ammonia rises then nitrItes rise & ammonia drops to 0. Then once nitrItes peak, the nitrAtes start to rise & nitrIte drops to 0.
Can you give us the readings you are getting for ammonia, nitrIte & nitrAte for both your fish tank AND for your tapwater.

cheers for the reply deeda didnt think anyone was gonna ill get back in a bit with exact readings. water seems to have cleared up a little todaystill not crystal but better. my tank is probably a little overstocked but have adressed that issue by removing some of the bigger central americans and putting them in the hospital 100 gallon in the garage for the time being till i sort out what stock i want to keep indoors. the sand is just playsand which is established for about 6 months and no i dont have any bogwood at all ust slate and terracotta plant pots. Any help?

right this is starting to get really strange as i said water quality has become clearer a little bit anyway but im getting fluctuating readings now the amonia is reading between 4.0 and 8.0 ppm which aint good and seems worse than yesterday and nitrite is between 0.5 and 1.0 ppm which i guess is about the same as yesterday, tap water is coming out at 0.0ppm for both amonia and nitrite . please help with any ideas. shall i keep changing water regularly or leave t be for a couple of days again? keep feeding to a minimum still?

help please one and all read whole thread for a detailed timescale of events, anyone think the filter may not be operating properly everything seems fine with it though it was brand new flow seems to be ok. help help help help! all opinions apreciated. cheers

Who makes your test kit? Is it liquid or strips? When did you buy it? Liquid kits are usually good for 6 months to 1 year max after opening.

Keep doing daily water changes of 20% to keep ammonia & nitrIte levels down. Do not
clean the gravel or filter. Just change the water making sure to add chlorine/chloramine removal conditioner. Changing the water won't affect your cycling.

Keep feeding to minimum.

its liquid and is probably pushing about the 6 month mark now i guess, cheers buddy ill keep doin that as i have been already will keep updating
