New fish: African Arowana

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry to hear it levi.. sucks..

Go with bloodworms and daphnia next time. Water changes every other day (minimum) and rinsed sponge filters every other day. I also fed mine dense culture crumbles (over 60% minimum crude protein). Give it a second try. They're definitely worth it.

Nice Oddball, how big is that guy? Arent daphnia too small for a fish that size? I've found most of it getting sucked into the filters.

The polys below him are 18 and 20 inches. I don't have the latest measurement on him.

Daphnia are referenced for the juvie afaros. Mine is eating large pellets and an occassional small minnow.

Sponge filters are vital to raising young afaros until they're 8"+. They can 'graze' on leftover foods until the next feeding. Young afaros require 24/7 access to food for at least the 1st 6-8 months.

I remember reading your post about bare bottom tanks, daphnia and bloodworms. The fish was eating frozen brine shrimp at the LFS, so I brought him home put a sponge filter in his tank, fed some more brine shrimp and went to bed. I woke up to give him blood worms and he was dead. I'll give it another shot and I'm going to stick with your plan. IIRC you only had 1 out of 4 make it right? I was prepared for a death going into this one.

Thanks for chiming in though Phil, I appreciate your help.

Edit: Since you said that they require 24x7 access to food, I'm guessing that's what did him in. I'm positive that he didn't have that luxury at the LFS. Maybe next time.

Sorry for the loss. wouldn't mind trying these too one day.
see aquascape have them in, for what seems like a good price.:)

very nice... good luck with it ;)
