I currently have a 55 gallon tank with 4 jd's , 2 firemouths, 1 green terror, and a gibbicepps pleco. I will be getting rid of 2 of the male jack dempsey's as they are both fighting with my nicest colored male. He is almost 5 inches, while the rest of the fish left only average about 3 inches. Can i add something new to the tank, or will i overcrowd it? If i can add a fish, any suggestions? thanks

Sure, you can add something new - for now. Keep in mind though, that with time, your guys are gonna need a lot more room- Especially if you keep them all together. What did you have in mind to add?

don't add anything if you plan on keeping them in there for the next year, even with the 2 male JDs gone, otherwise silver dollars or tinfoil barbs can be added for movement

I would keep as is unless you plan on upgradeing.

Apparently the question here is whether or not you plan on upgrading. If you don't, then I would say no. Even as is, you may end up having aggression issues. If you do plan on upgrading, then I would recommend getting what you want now. This will prevent having to use grow out tanks, which can be a pain. JD's and GT's can be particularly 'rowdy' so I would say maybe an oscar, or some dither fish, SD's.

Is the other JD you're keeping female? If so, they may decide to breed, and you might end up having to remove them. So heads up! and good luck.

i ould wait and see how big your fish get if i where you i would get a larger tank and then get another fish a catfish or bullhead

yeah, the other jd is a female. i guess what i had in mind was another cichlid of some sort. something that stay s a little on the small side would be nice, but i would want to make sure it wouldn't get beat up. but honestly, the most aggressive fish in the tank now is one of the firemouths. the male jd i am keeping is only aggressive toward the other big male jd. other than that, with the occastional brief squabble things are pretty calm

I wouldn't add anything. Tanks sounds overcrowded as is. I think that tank would look great with one Green Terror and a pleco...that's all I would keep in it.
