Here's a picture of a melanurus I found on cichlid room companion. Just look at it before you jump to the conclusion of Vieja synspilum. ;) To me this looks more like your fish then a syn.

Thanks for all your comments and responses, but regardless of what the fish was i had to take it back to my LFS. Things didnt work out between it and my GT and i didnt want the Melanurus/Syn to die. But once again thanks for all the responses
But if guys want i can post pics of the fish i exchanged it for.

Well that sucks to hear! I think you did the right thing though, I wish more hobbiest thought that way.

As for the new fish...I'm thinking zonatum. I had a pair of these guys awhile back and that one looks just like my smaller one. These guys are a bit harder to correctly I.D. There's a few different species that all kinda mush together.

Example..

Bifasciatus
Zonatus
Guttulatas
Fenestratus

All those fish could be in the mix unless your sure of your supplier and their I.D's

But if I had to guess one or the other I'd say Zonatus. Stunning fish by the way, nice pick up.

first fish I'd say is definitely either synspilus or synspilus hybrid. It wouldn't be full bifasc or fene because of the lateral line that only runs the back 1/3 of the fish...this is most characteristic of sysnpilus. melanarus usually look significantly different from synspilus so add that to the incredibly rarity of melanarus in the hobby and I'd bet on synspilus for sure.

new fish I'd lean more towards fenestratus. fene's have red in the face and as well can have blue in the face and down the body. zonatus do usually have red in the dorsal fin and tail but rarely show any red at all in the face. If synspilus is the red head cichlid then zonatus is the blue head cichlid. :D
