how's it going MFK members. this is my first post but i've been reading articles on here for a while. I have a australian arowana thats about 19" in a 120 gal tank. Had the fish for about 3 years now. Everytime I put new fish in the tank they never live for more then 48hrs. I just bought a pacu and he is almost hitting the 48 hr mark. The pacu was nice and healthy when I bought him but when I put him in the tank the eye started to have some white stuff forming on it. Today I go check on the pacu and I notice the white stuff on his eyes started looking like fungus or mold. Now its moving to his upper lip and fins. I changed 40% of the water and added salt to the tank. Turned up the temp to 86-88 degrees. I checked the water parameters and here are the readings
PH - 6.0
Hi Range PH - 7.4
Ammo. - 3.0
Nitrite - 0
Nitrate - looks more like 40
Has anybody ever had this happen before.

Your water quality is still bad. Change another 50% to bring Nitrate to 20 and ammonia to 1.5. Then wait next day and do another 50% to bring Nitrate down to 10, and ammonia to 0.75.

Then wait for a week to see where your levels are and change water or add another filter accordingly.

What type filtration on your 120.A 3yr old tank should be cycled enough that a addition of a Pacu should not cause a reading of 3.0
I agree something must be wrong with your water quality
How often do you do water changes
How often do you monitor your water readings
What kind of substrate do you use

Did you test your water right after a PWC that can give you a bad reading.

Also test your tap water for ammonia/nitrate

i am running a ehiem wet/dry canister filter. just recieved my rena xp3 from UPS and that will be going in shortly. i change 50% of water every 2 weeks. check water parameters every 1st and 15th of the month. I use to breed discus in the same tank but with a different wet/dry filter, and everything was okay. how often are you suppose to change the media in the ehiem canister filters? i'll do another water change tonight and post the H2O parameters later.

Also have to say a jardini about 19" probably doesn't like his tankmates.. any bullying going on?

Is this 19" arowana in the tank that the fish are not lasting more then 48 hours in?

Also why do you have 2 different pH readings?
